OUR MISSION

The Harnish Properties Charitable Fund was started in 2005 to support our local children and those who serve them.  As we attempted to build the Fund, several grants were made to local schools with special needs families and to community organizations which help the underprivileged.  On April 19, 2010 it became abundantly clear that the focus of the Fund should change.  On that day Hunter Todd Riley Harnish was born to Megan and Justin Harnish.

For about five months, Megan and Justin agonized in anticipation of the birth of Hunter.  Ultrasound and other testing revealed several heart defects the severity of which could not be accurately determined until birth.  With the timely and supportive advice and care from nurses and doctors, Hunter was born at full term, was a whopping 6 pounds 13 ounces and looked terrific.  On day two at Emanuel Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon, Hunter underwent eight long hours of open heart surgery.  His breathing tube was removed “early”; his chest was closed “early” a few days later; he went home “early” to be with his Mom, Dad and sister Stella 13 days later.  Hunter reportedly has a “fully repaired” heart and at this writing is just over four months old, smiling, turning over, drinking lots of Momma’s milk and growing rapidly.  Justin, Megan and their family and friends could not be happier.

As you might expect, the above description of the last eight months does not attempt to capture the agony, fear, anxiety, happiness, joy and gratefulness and all other emotions experienced during that time.  Neither does it accurately describe the level of expertise, care, love, professionalism and dedication of the doctors, nurses and entire staff support from start to finish.  The have been called angels.  They are that for sure.  They are simply doing their hard, hard work like angels and with unsurpassed dedication to children and families.

We know that not all stories like this have happy endings.  The Harnish Properties Children’s Heart Fund seeks to raise funds to help support Emanuel Children’s Hospital, the caregivers who work there, the children they serve and the broader community of children born with heart defects.  We pray for more happy endings.
